I think my favorite take so far is how this is a reflection of the misogyny inherent in Hollywood, where a multi-billion dollar property is given to a guy with an okay track record (at least, artistically) with no plan in place. Would they have given this to Patty Jenkins without a full write-up? To her credit, she probably would have demanded it. From the outside it seems like a massive organizational failure by the Disney Corporation, mixed with massive fan momentum that, despite artistic missteps, still dragged the films over the billion dollar box office mark, though steadily declining from over 2 billion for TFA to just over 1 billion 4 years later for TROS.
