@davidgerard @cstross For a little more context, here's the pound against the dollar since 1800, showing periods of stability, the point where the £ peaked in the 1860s (£1=$8, when the UK's half-crown got its nickname of 'dollar'), and its steady decline since WWII. For reference, Caltrain's electrification project is 82 kilometers and is going to end up taking 7 years (if it's not delayed again)
