YIMBYism seems extreme because most don't realize how radical last century of land-use planning has been. We rejected millennia of knowledge about how our built environments should be laid to accommodate driving, and now slightly rolling back those changes seems revolutionary.

It took just over a year to build the Empire state building in 1930, I'd be surprised if there were many buildings of any kind built in Mountain View in that amount of time in recent years. But I'm happy that we're making progress in California, and other states (and countries) are starting to copy our newest laws. Next let's do transit!

It's crazy how low these numbers are. I guess my working theory is people are so burned out on COVID precautions that they're failing to do stuff that clearly *does* (at least for most people) pass a cost-benefit test.

Just 4% of eligible Americans have gotten latest covid booster. And overall US booster rates remain very low. @EricTopol: “A travesty.” @jonfavs: “I blame the federal health bureaucracy.” A look at what went wrong — and what’s at stake if virus surges. https://t.co/ds0qPMWWTT

It seems like the amount of talk about NPI interventions over the last year made normal people tune out everything, so now when we have something truly new, they're not listening anymore.

Threads

• Thread summarizing the US Jobs report for September. Growth has slowed, but unemployment is at a 50 year low. Krugman thinks the Fed has overshot with interest rates, although of course, it's all a question of time horizons.

• Since Musk's proposal for an end to the war in Ukraine (by capitulating to Russia), folks have gotten jittery about whether Starlink is going to keep working for Ukrainian troops, who depend on it completely. Although others are reporting it's working fine still. Plus Musk has been saying dumb stuff about Taiwan as well.

• Short thread commenting on how YIMBYism is vilified as right-wing by people who are themselves conservative, while actual social democrats are embracing housing production. Here's some recent polling on the subject that points the same direction, as well as some specific examples.

I tuned in for the interview with @jbarro, but my favorite part of this episode was @StephenMerchant’s tangent about Bond that almost got cut. Full Episode overcast.fm/+5dx_2R2OE
