I had not quite realized how much slower L1 cache is than normal math operations. It's from this talk, although it's worth noting that it's not necessarily true in higher level languages. Along similar lines, Mozilla discovered some time ago that it's often faster to re-download things than to retrieve them from the browser cache.

• Nevada has a ballot initiative to move to a ranked choice system, Andrew Prokop goes into detail analyzing the possible implications. TL;DR: Ranked Choice structured this way can be very good for incumbents, especially incumbent centrists.
