the knowledge that math is literally significantly faster than L1 cache hits, so memoization in many cases is actually a performance /loss/ is making me insane
I had not quite realized how much slower L1 cache is than normal math operations. It's from this talk, although it's worth noting that it's not necessarily true in higher level languages. Along similar lines, Mozilla discovered some time ago that it's often faster to re-download things than to retrieve them from the browser cache.
