See new Tweets Conversation Aaron Green @AaronGuhreen I do not understand the alleged "equity" concern with speed cameras. Our deadliest streets are primarily in our lowest income neighborhoods. Speed cameras save lives. Unless you think traffic fines are worse than people dying, what's the problem? latimes.com Editorial: California, legalize speed cameras and save lives Automated speed enforcement has reduced crashes and deaths in the cities where it's used. California lawmakers should let L.A. and other cities try speed cameras on the most dangerous streets.

Cameras are extremely effective, and they're fair. Making them illegal in California was stupid, but it's never too late to correct a mistake. All the other options are worse.

Brian Potter @_brianpotter In 1907, just 8% of US homes had electrical service. Two decades later, it was nearly 70%. How did this happen? This week on Construction Physics, I look at the early history of the electrical grid.

This is an excerpt from Potter's excellent "Birth of the Grid" article. One thing I learned was that the DC vs AC war ended when a way to easily convert from one to the other was invented.

See new Tweets Conversation Science Is Strategic @scienceisstrat1 It’s not even close. This year $1.7 trillion is forecast to be spent on clean energy πŸ“ˆ vs. $1 trillion on fossil fuels πŸ“‰

The headline of the associated FT article is that solar investment now exceeds oil investment globally. Here's the graph from the IEA report.

 M. Nolan Gray @mnolangray The Los Angeles River has got to be one of the most underutilized public spaces in North America, right? This could be an incredible linear park with a multimodal greenway that connects the whole city.
src

If you're worried it would no longer function as flood prevention, Gray points out that there exist many parks that also function as flood prevention.

Stephen Hoskins πŸ”°πŸ—οΈπŸ§¦πŸͺ© @GeorgistSteve Absolutely sucks that Gallup doesn't split their "what is the worst tax" by whether the respondent owns or rents, but I think it's extremely revealing that old white people are way more likely to hate property tax, while young POC are much more okay with it.
src

Asking landowners whether they like their land being taxed is silly. As much as LVT is better than a standard property tax, both are better than income taxes. Arguments that people have a deep personal connection to their land are also bogus.

See new Tweets Conversation Alec Stapp @AlecStapp Very promising development here on bipartisan permitting reform! Trading transmission for NEPA reform would make a lot of sense β€” and be a huge boon to clean energy deployment.
src

If we do get a debt limit increase, maybe it can come with some good stuff attached! Other reporting indicates that permitting reform is likely to not fully make it in, unfortunately less funding for the IRS is also under discussion. The real question is whether a deal will happen at all, and the question there is basically one of "the competence and reasonableness of Speaker McCarthy"

Armand Domalewski @ArmandDoma SAM ALTMAN BUILT THIS IN CAVE WITH A BOX OF SCRAPS Quote Tweet aaron holmes @aaronpholmes Β· 16h Exclusive: In a December meeting w/ top execs, Satya Nadella laid into his head of research. "OpenAI built this with with 250 people," he said. "Why do we have Microsoft Research at all?" My deep dive on how $MSFT swallowed its pride to back OpenAI: https://theinformation.com/articles/how-microsoft-swallowed-its-pride-to-make-a-massive-bet-on-openai
src

Good that Nadella chose to pay Altman for access to GPT4 rather than incapacitating him and tearing it GPT4 out of his chest as Stane does a few scenes later.

β€’ Thread with extremely robust causal evidence that shingles causes dementia. Good news, we have a vaccine for shingles.
