Armand Domalewski @ArmandDoma One of the classic morbid facts you learn in Economics is that recessions actually reduce senior deaths, because weak labor markets mean nursing homes staff up for cheap, while periods of growth kill seniors because nursing homes can’t compete on wages and run lean on staff Quote Tweet Matthew Walther @matthewwalther · Jun 7 Never mind the testimony of your senses (help wanted signs everywhere etc); in a Senate hearing I just learned that VA nursing homes require an additional 190,000 staff before they can return to pre-2020 levels. Similar figures can be multiplied across industries.

A one percentage point drop in unemployment is associated with a 5% increase in nursing home deaths.

John Scalzi @scalzi Holy shit a state government was too racist even for this Supreme Court cnn.com Supreme Court orders voting maps redrawn in Alabama | CNN Politics The Supreme Court on Thursday ordered Alabama officials to redraw the state’s congressional map to allow an additional Black majority district to account for the fact that the state is 27% Black.

Sounds like a few states are going to have their districts redrawn.

Alex Armlovich 🏗️🌐🔰🚋 @aarmlovi One factor we forget in postwar suburbanization (and the new urban renaissance) is that US urban cores were basically in wildfire-like air every day in the summer My dad still talks about the yellow cloud over Buffalo back in the late 1970s LA wasn't clean til 2000

The east coast is similar, here's Philadelphia's data.

See new Tweets Conversation Noah "Rabbit = Good Friend" Smith 🐇🇺🇦 @Noahpinion · Jun 7 Market power in the global oil industry might be decisively shifting from sellers to buyers, as OPEC flounders, EVs rise, and the G7 forms a de facto buyers' cartel with China and India. If so, we're in for an era of cheap oil. noahpinion.blog The reverse OPEC maneuver Pricing power in the oil industry is shifting, and will shift more. Noah "Rabbit = Good Friend" Smith 🐇🇺🇦 @Noahpinion Three basic points: 1. The Ukraine War is forcing Russia to defect from OPEC+. 2. The G7 price cap + sanctions are allowing China and India to act as an informal buyers' cartel 3. EVs increase the incentive to defect from OPEC. All together, this means OPEC is screwed.

I really appreciate a supply and demand graph, this is from Noah Smith's article on the new informal oil buyers cartel.

The New York Times @nytimes Breaking News: General Motors will join Ford in tailoring its electric cars to Tesla’s chargers. The deal will help set an industry standard for charging plugs. nytimes.com Tesla Will Open Its Charging Network to G.M.’s Electric Vehicles The electric car company, which operates the country’s most extensive charging network, struck a similar deal with Ford Motor recently.

It seems like this is a tipping point for US charging infrastructure, especially if this means the other manufacturers all go along with this. Apparently the interface for payment is much much simpler.
