Former Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe was shot at a campaign event Friday, public broadcaster NHK reported, adding that he was showing no vital signs. At least two gunshots were heard on-site. This is a developing story.

Initial reporting seemed to heavily imply he'd been killed, but it's still not clear. Seems to be former navy using a homemade gun. Shootings are super rare in Japan, on the order of 10 a year. Finally, here's a great article from a month ago about his massive impact of Abe on Japanese society. Oh, btw, they switched the official first/last name style recently, so his name is now Abe Shinzo.
