Trying to tell my six year-old that there’s always work available for plumbers & electricians with good reputations, but grandpa is trying to tell him to be a writer….
This is what my parents taught me as well, not that I took this advice.
Maybe New York should respond to staffing shortages by using one staffer per train like in DC, Chicago, London, Paris, etc rather than cutting service?
Not even clear that modern trains should be manned, but two people seems truly excessive.
Great thread from @ChadBown The chip shortage didn’t just come from the pandemic. It also has a lot to do with trade policy in the previous 4 years. https://t.co/j4Nz6sZHei

This, and the associated article in foreign affairs were very informative as an introduction
Yeah the thing is, this is both true but also makes what they did extra fucked up! All of them waxed eloquent about the evils of slavery. They weren’t ignorant or confused. They knew it was evil and kept doing the evil! But that’s not exculpatory! That makes it even worse!

I read so much of their correspondence relating to slavery for the Lafayette book. Washington, Jefferson, Madison...they talked all about how bad, immoral, and evil it was. But none of them lifted a finger to change it, end it, or quit it.
It’s actually incredible to read a bunch of dudes who had the energetic courage and self-will to stage a whole-ass against-impossible-odds armed revolt, retreat in helpless passive voice talking about how they hoped slavery would end someday but alas we can do nothing.
Retreating into passive voice, heh. I’ve been watching The Good Place again recently, this meme spoke to me on the subject:
And back to a normal still photo today:
