Literally all the news is still about Ukraine, but at least itβs not so many posts today!
I've started doing bullet-point summaries of what I learned in my video interviews. Easier to absorb quickly than a transcript!
Here's the full interview, I thought it was pretty interesting.
Stopping the Russian advance improves Ukraine's negotiating position, but what bargain are they/we hoping to strike?
I don't think Putin is going to accept military defeat and nothing to show for the effort. As with Cuban Missile Crisis, need to allow him to save face somehow.
Trying to find a face-saving measure for Russia now is super important. Yglesias: "When appeasement works we tend not to call it that but it works all the time."
The future is a very weird place. Ukrainians are uploading videos on TikTok about how to drive abandoned or captured Russian military vehicles.
It's the fact that it's TikTok rather than Youtube that really makes this seem like a new world to me.
Western oil companies have a lot of know-how in terms of extraction and exploration. Also, with sanctions hitting Russia's finances hard, Russia may not be able to pay its oil and gas workers without foreign help. So this is important.

Exxon is the main remaining US company in Russia now.
Starlink is important for helping keep Ukraine online throughout the war.

That was a very fast deployment, wow.
