Recall noise has significant known negative impacts on humans, yet another negative externality of cars!
Downtown was zoned based on existing structures. That means most r3 areas were already majority multifamily when zoning was retrofitted. Yet still many single family homes remain.
Cities change slowly. Upzoning only changes what is allowed, it does not force change.
This is the final slide of a longer thread about Mountain View's R3 zones. All that R1 next to the Caltrain station is very foolish.
Yesterday, I came across a peculiar public comment, signed by Laura Arrillaga-Andreessen and Marc Andreessen, violently opposing updating the Town of Atherton's proposal to make it possible to build multi-family housing in America's richest zip code.
Marc Andreessen famously wrote the essay "It's Time to Build" pushing for removing obstacles to building things (including housing) in America, especially regulation. He knows the YIMBY arguments because he's made them before, but maybe it doesn't apply to Atherton? Many jokes were made.
