Interesting fact: New Zealand, HK, Singapore, and the UK actually pay *more* per mile of train than we do.
Another interesting fact: Road construction costs have exploded in the U.S. This suggests that the infrastructure cost problem is not primarily about lack of know-how.
I’ve mentioned Amtrak being incompetent in the past, and I’m not taking that back, but that’s just a question of managing the trains we already have. When it comes to building new track, there are clearly more issues. Then again, it’s probably worth the cost. These are all segments from a great Vox article.
