Christian Fong @christiantfong After nearly 3 years of working at RMI, including 2 years in our Boulder office, I finally took a tour of the building, and got the answer to the number one question I've had since working here: Why on earth would we put vertical solar panels on an east-facing wall?
(src)

This goes into a whole thread, but the main reason is that if you have these panels, you save on exterior cladding, which isn't cheap! Someone else pointed out that some solar panels are now cheaper than any exterior cladding. You could theoretically save without plugging in the panels!

Somehow I thought it would be NYC way up there on the chart for the US. SF is such a high performing city, imagine how much happier so many people would be if we would just allow more people to live there!

See new Tweets Conversation Pew Research Center @pewresearch Share of Americans who say there has been a great deal or a fair amount of progress on racial equality in the last 60 years, among those who identify with or lean to: The Republican Party: 67% The Democratic Party: 38% https://pewrsr.ch/3OR1iNp

So, on the face of it, these poll numbers for 'not much progress' make no sense, but Ben Dreyfuss points out that people clearly aren't answering literally, they really mean "not enough progress has been made". Overall, the lesson here is that you have to be careful when interpreting poll results.

San Franciscans are making it happen. sfstandard.com People Are Having Sex in Robotaxis, and Nobody Is Talking About It A 2018 study said the spread of self-driving cars was likely to mean more sex on the road. John Gruber's coverage of this story indicated he thinks this is really bad. And like, if folks are ruining the car that's bad. But it's not clear that's what's happening. I'm with Noah Smith on this.

See new Tweets Conversation James Medlock @jdcmedlock · Aug 9 Yea, the issue with our pandemic response was not that it wasn’t generous - it’s that it had to be wildly generous because we’ve spent decades purposely making welfare hard to access and hollowing out the administrative ability to calculate things like wage replacement rates Quote Tweet austerity is theft @wideofthepost · Aug 9 We had like the biggest spending pandemic response of the world. The problem is that we needed to because we have such a patchwork, half-assed welfare state to begin with, so we basically had to stand up one overnight with a money cannon, and that risks a lot of inaccuracy. twitter.com/jules_su/statu… Jeff Stein @JStein_WaPo We're still going to be tweeting about this in the 2060s and nobody will have any idea what we're talking about

Someone else went a step further and argued that Trump’s choice of Mnuchin was a turning point in American History
