This is comparable to the surge in anti-Asian hate crimes.

Shalom Lipner @ShalomLipner
"The surge was part of a nationwide trend that saw 2,717 antisemitic incidents across the United States, including 88 assaults, an increase of 167 percent from the year before." @liamstack https://t.co/KFU1PRCwIK

Good thread here. I am much more worried about a situation in which Musk’s varied business interests lead to too little free speech on Twitter rather than too much.

Elon Musk has a Tesla factory in China and he wants to sell more cars there, as many China observers note. What happens if Beijing leans on him about say, a Uyghur or Hong Kong activist account? Or about Chinese disinformation bots leveraging this platform?

To the extent that the real goal of US policy in Ukraine is to weaken Russia, Putin could (and indeed should) foil this plan by ceasing the invasion.

This from Hobbes is a popular but the situation is Tweeters are richer than the general population.
But because they are also younger and better-educated, it’s a more left-wing group than the electorate — so left-wing people like it when elites are responsive to Twitter.

Twitter is basically “what if you could do politics without non-college old people?”
The answer is leftists would have a lot more influence and rightist politics would be techy edgdelords instead of observant Christians.
But you can’t do politics that way.

@MattBruenig But notice that 8chan does NOT include equivalents of tons of 1st Amendment compliant speech restrictions -- noise ordinances, anti-harassment laws, and so on. You can include equivalents of all those and still be aping the 1st Amendment.

"I want to say one thing: @elonmusk's Starlink is what changed the war in #Ukraine's favour. #Russia went out of its way to blow up all our comms. Now they can't. Starlink works under Katyusha fire, under artillery fire. It even works in Mariupol." https://t.co/C2QnVTE3tc

Neither of these things is happening.

Bill Gates is buying up the majority of American farmland and BlackRock is buying the majority of single family houses but I'm supposed to believe the biggest threat to us is Elon Musk buying Twitter?

I really don’t think shaming people for taking the cure for Covid is a good idea — we now have more doses than people taking it.
