We were walking with a friend’s 3yo in “pedestrian friendly” downtown Carmel. There were so many driveways* we couldn’t let her get ahead of us. On the sidewalk. * Parking minimums: Mandated pedestrian conflict points so no motorist will ever have to walk more than a few steps.
Car-dependent places have a way of making you feel like a terrible parent when your child does normal age-appropriate things like moving unpredictably or falling over.

Language Model: *finds cure for cancer* AI Commentator: "actually, if you look at the cure, it's just a statistical remix of ideas that were in the training data. You see, the model isn't actually intelligent, it just predicts the next token one at a time."
Beta Alia just did something pretty astounding. The longest battery-electric aircraft flight ever. 386 miles. (Also, a great little bio on one of their engineers.) This company is the leader in electric flight and it seems like no one knows about them.
I once asked a native Hawaiian journalist if there was any independence movement in Hawaii. He gave me a withering look and calmly explained that the statehood referendum passed with 93% in favor.
Do not contribute to the exploitation of Hawaiian land and Hawaiian people by vacationing to/in Hawai’i. Hawai’i is illegally occupied by the US and suffering under their imperialist boot. There is no way to “ethically” travel to occupied lands. https://t.co/rKOjAEuBGK

I find it so fascinating how fine the line is between the world being changed or not. Were it not for one person at waking up super paranoid that they absolutely had to build ChatGPT, it's likely we wouldn't be going through LLM mania today, and that hundreds of… https://t.co/isCY3GBTCH
I'm pretty convinced, based on my reading of the GPT-4 technical report and Altman's subsequent interviews, that OpenAI's GPT models have a lot more performance on tap than they actually poured with GPT-4. They are slow walking this to manage take-off risks, I think.
There's evidence that OpenAI may be deliberately not pushing the performance envelope, but is instead carefully managing the take-off scenario so it unfolds on a slower timetable. @jonst0kes guests for PW — https://t.co/XCJkVjGGGH

if every mass shooter in America was limited to using whatever Fallout-ass gun they could make in their garage that would save thousands of lives
The whole gun control argument should have died the moment a former head state was killed by an improvised firearm in one of the countries with the most restrictive gun laws in the world. https://t.co/f5AWC51iRR
