Nah, if China's going to arm Russia, conquer Taiwan, take over the South China Sea, steal all our tech, and build up its military with the explicitly stated purpose of fighting us, then they are in a Cold War mentality and there's nothing we can do to stop that.

the U.S should get out of the Cold War mentality- China is a really diverse place with lot's of regional variation. Although it is hard to reconcile with the central government- there is still plenty of opportunity for commerce between the two countries.

Massive cultural shift: superstar Democratic congresswomen @AOC describes how she safely visited a triple-meltdown site in Japan. She further describes French nuclear waste recycling as a good thing. She has 9 million followers, many of whom are young women. This is wild:
"Howare you keeping safe in the exlusion zone? What dose of radiation are you receiving during your visit? Be safe and thank you for your service!"

"Thank you! I had an individual geiger counter strapped to me the entire time, which monitors the cumulative radiation a person is exposed to...

There are Geiger counters on everything, everywhere. Nuclear operators were timing how long we were in different respective zones... We got pretty close [to] the reactor - close enough to see the explosion site and rubble - but there was also a defined zone where we did not cross.

At the end we went through all sorts of protocols and technologies to measure... exposure. At the end of the tour, my final Geiger counter measure was 0.2 mSv - the equivalent of roughly two chest X-Rays. I decided for myself beforehand that that level of exposure was worth the information and policy expertise from the experience. For me, understanding + studying the science and scale of radiation puts me more at ease"
"France uses nuclear power. How do they manage it differently? They don't have earthquakes..."

"I can get into more detail later, but one key difference in France's nuclear technology is that France recycles their nuclear waste.

When we discuss the risk and controversial parts of nuclear, a lot of it centers on nuclear waste and what to do with it. Nuclear waste is radioactive, and needs to be securely taken care of.

France recycles their waste, increasing the efficiency of their system and reducing the amount of radioactive waste to deal with. The US does not recylce our waste, whch means ift builds up and gets stored on-site. Japan sends its waste to France and the UK for recycling but does not presently have recycling facilities of its own [sic]"

As required by law, I, a human author, will now give my long-form opinion on whether an AI is coming to take my job. SPOILER: Technically yes, realistically no. I will probably be around for a while yet, as will other human authors. Read more at the link.
whatever.scalzi.comOMG is the AI Coming For My Job?!???!??!!!?!?!?Technically yes, as this New York Times story about people flooding science fiction magazines with AI-generated story submissions makes evident. But realistically, no, because all these generated s…

You can’t effectively reckon with the past if you don’t believe in the future. If you rightly think that Abu Ghraib was horrible, you should have something to say about the countless Abu Ghraibs that Russia has created, not turn away and shrug.

🧡 Noah has a good piece here: China directly arming Russia changes not just the complexion of this war but the broader geopolitical landscape in ways we probably can’t fully grasp yet. In the short-term it almost certainly moves the EU into the β€œanti-China” camp https://t.co/5hAmuEzCye

China's decision to send lethal aid to Russia is ominous for several reasons. First, it means the Ukraine war is now a true proxy war - and one that the West is ill-equipped to win. Second, it means China's ambitions aren't really on pause. https://t.co/ZKx29Hvvam

New: Twitter told employees that Slack was down for "routine maintenance." That's a lie β€” the company hasn't paid its bill. But weirder still, Slack didn't shut down Twitter's instance. Someone at Twitter manually shut off access:
