TIL flipping *Cincinnati* has retractable bollards in a shopping district, something that we are told us impossible in backwards California.
Holy shit what is this? There is a public market in Cincinnati that has been pedestrianized...and permits deliveries with retractable bollards?!?! https://t.co/6iBpQNDjey

So allow Ukraine to represent the USSR at the ceremony, problem solved
Today marks 78 years since the liberation of Auschwitz concentration camp by the Red Army, yet Russia was excluded from the ceremony. This is unheard of and v insulting. The USSR was first to reach Berlin, inflicted 80% of German casualties, and lost 27 million of its own people.

Guy who’s determined to never cook separate meals for adults and kids because deep down he knows chicken nuggets are fucking delicious.
it was dumb as shit to kill him but soleimani's primary job was to run sectarian death squads in foreign countries
Remember when we insanely chose to murder Qasem Soleimani, & an anonymous Iranian official said, "We can't strike back, because America doesn't have any heroes. Who are we going to kill, Spongebob?"
I will believe that supply and demand are overemphasized when there is one American city whose policymakers say “because we want housing to be affordable, we are eliminating all restrictions on supply that don’t have a bona fide safety rationale.”
Supply & Demand are over emphasized in housing affordability Yes increasing Supply lowers price. BUT not that much for units that are "weak substitutes." Highly amenitized Studios, shared bed co-living, and ADUs don't correlate THAT well with family units Very different goods

broken windows policing
My dumbest-sounding correct belief is still that we should summarily fire police who direct vulgarity at the public. If you can't keep yourself from calling someone a bitch/motherfucker while on the clock, you shouldn't be trusted with a gun.
David Binnig @davebinnig
Our violent crime isn't actual abnormal compared to peer countries. but the proliferation of guns in the US makes violence more deadly which popularizes support for militarized police and public safety gets deadlocked as these two elements perpetuate each other.
The Russian deficit, primarily thanks to increased military spending and sanctions, is reaching one of the biggest heights since the collapse of the Soviet Union. Russia is copying all the mistakes from the past. Sources: Bloomberg and atlanticcouncil.org/blogs/econogra…
About 18 months ago versions of this chart (here are two I dug out) went viral a couple of dozen times. Compare with the actual data.
Do *I* want to own a fish tank? No. Do I want *you* to own a fish tank? Not really. Do I think people *should* own pet fishes? I can’t see why they would. And yet, it’s good that if people want to own fish tanks they are allowed to do this.
I wish I had the stat at the tip of my tongue but it’s probably something like “the most recent 10% of homeowners pay 80% of the property tax” which is just insane. Can lower income tax if we fix property taxes in California.
The top 8% in CA pay 78% of the income tax. If we lose even 10% of that, it is not good for CA. We should want more successful folks here. Now is the wrong time for more taxes.
