in 3rd grade we had a prison guard do a “scared straight” speech and we asked what the prisoners ate. he said “nothing good—mcdonald’s burgers” and when he saw our faces light up, he said “ya but imagine that 3 times a week…”
that was when he lost control of the room

LET THE TOWER OF BABEL FALL

Actually feels like the social network Pangaea of the 2010s is fracturing (not saying any platforms are gonna die either, probably the opposite) and we’re returning to elements of the much more diffuse ~2006 internet, but way bigger, with everyone online.

My taxi driver today told me, in this order: that we are all citizens of the world; that he had a "virgin wife"—"nobody touched her before me"; that ancient Rome spread "the aliens'" technology across Europe; and that a "secret society" controls every government on earth.

San Francisco built, for years, a financial model that relied on everyone *but* long term residents to pay for its government services. Payroll taxes on employees who commuted in, impact fees on new development, etc. Now that revenue has dried up and the City faces reckoning https://t.co/Jjeas65VaF

Relevant to the $728M budget deficit announced yesterday, this thread from January 2021 still holds up.
No policymaker can fix this singlehandedly. This will take a united team effort from our entire leadership.

CBO is “saying that shipping freight by rail releases 8x less GHG into the atmosphere than shipping same amount of freight via truck”
👆🏼
Yet we have a freight rail industry that is systematically losing market share to trucking & whose oligopolistic set of owners don’t care… https://t.co/vAu6kLVT02

Also not great that 3 years into the pandemic, the NYT is still comparing an *infection* fatality rate for Ebola with a *case* fatality rate for COVID. Those are very different numbers and the IFR << CFR for COVID (now more like 0.1% than 1%) since so many cases go undiagnosed.

Alexander Russo @alexanderrusso
CORRECTION:
"An earlier version of this article misstated the death rate for Covid patients. It is now 1% or less, not about 3%. Because of an editing error, the corrected sentence omitted the phrase 'diagnosed with' in reference to the rate.

I somehow missed this: DOJ apparently having a heated argument as to whether to indict Binance et al immediately or simply indict them later.

Mountain View's housing element is something to behold. At first glance, the City appears to plan for 150% of RHNA. At second glance, you notice housing doesn't pencil, a third of the units are faked, and the city clearly violates anti-segregation law
