This is a good paper paper from @DonaldShoup on frictions of land assembly and graduated density zoning to incent cooperation.
But what if we looked at reducing non-usable floorspace (second stairs, corridors & large elevators) to reduce the threshold for "buildable" lots?

⚡️Speaking of Russian military casualties, Putin says 'death is inevitable.'
During a meeting with soldiers' mothers, Russian dictator Vladimir Putin compared the country's losses during the invasion of Ukraine with the number of people dying in road accidents.

Ugh … I’m formally committed to moderation and political pragmatism now but it still kinda seems to me that personal cars should be completely banned from Manhattan — just deliveries, tradespeople, a fleet of accessible taxis, and plenty of busways and bike lanes.

There’s a faction on US Twitter that insists we could have had Xi Jinping’s Covid policies if not for David Leonhardt and Emily Oster.

At this movement in the chilly winter night, Shanghai people are chanting on the downtown street “ we don’t want dictatorship, we want democracy”.Extraordinary courage and solidarity showed. After 3 years of suffering from lockdown & control of society, people are raged. https://t.co/AZRFh6bbiE

Scenes from Hotan in Xinjiang where citizens waving red flag break through police barrier manned by white suits.
Similar street battles reported in Tianjin, Guangdong, Chongqing and elsewhere.

Widespread protests against the zero Covid policy on university campuses and city streets across China. People gathered to mourn the victims who died in a horrifying fire tragedy Thursday and protest the inhuman policy. Don't think I've seen anything like this since 1989.

Cao Guozheng, the President of Communication University of China, Nanjing, threatened the protesting students: “One day you will all pay a price for what you are doing!”
Students shouted back: “One day this country will pay a price (for what is has done to the people)!”

Scale of the protest tonight in Shanghai. Notice police didn’t do anything but standing calmly watching ppl protest and shouting. It’s not benevolence. My guess: they need to ask for directives from the top authorities. Police might be stunned as nobody dares doing so for decades
