It can be easy to miss this but there are two parallel discourses — one that's like "of course FTX was a scam, all crypto is a scam" and the other is like "of course FTX was a scam, FTX was working with regulators and abandoning the true faith of DeFi and Bitcoin maximalism."

Matthew Zeitlin @MattZeitlin
one interesting discourse note is that of course people with strong anti-crypto priors are all over the ftx story and generally running with the most negative take on it and claiming vindication (as is often justified), but so are *pro* crypto people, especially bitcoin maxis

Larry David getting sued for getting paid by a crypto exchange to promote it, wherein the promotion is Larry David playing Larry David claiming not to get crypto and not to think it's worth buying into... is both very Larry David... and very crypto.

No, because the whole point of crypto is scams. This is like trying to have a regulated Ponzi market.

Garrett @notgarrettblack
@jbarro Do you think we will finally see some sort of comprehensive regulatory structure around crypto? Feels like we are just relearning every financial lesson of the barely regulated late 19th and early 20th century.

The difficulty of pivoting or redeploying a scientific grant after a dead-end has been discovered is one of the forces pushing scientists to prioritize incremental, "safe" research.

• Highlights from the FTX 'first day declaration', they apparently lent billions of dollars to SBF, the guy handling this is the same person who handled the Enron case, and he says this one is worse.
