BuzzFeed News is dismantling our award-winning investigations team. So this is my last investigative project for the newsroom. I hope you'll give it a read and share it. I think our findings are pretty damning and worthy of your time.

We desperately need to regulate nuclear power plants in a comparative framework rather than apply an absolute safety standard.
Safety is good, but not if it leads us to use other power sources that are less safe!

I always wish people would kick the tires on this stuff more.
Is it true that, on balance, the leftward tilt of Twitter.com has empowered left politics in real ways? How would we know? What is the counterfactual?
I’m open to it, but we need evidence or grievance.

Suppose “the algorithm” was rigged to throttle engagement to defund the police tweets and shadowbanned defund activists — would that have hurt progressives?
Suppose Ricky Vaugh were still on here doing lots of explicitly anti-Semitic pro-Trump takes — does that help Trump?

What is more likely to get Elon Musk to do what you want in terms of policy change — cheering his vague pronouncements on free speech and then offering suggestions for how to implement them or dunking on him?

Every day in the political arena people face choices between emotionally satisfying self-expression and considered thinking about ends and means, and a great many people choose poorly.

The boring answer is that, like most people, I dramatically overestimated Russia's military capabilities. The more interesting answer is that I didn't expect the US to come up with such an effective policy response so quickly.

I think @binarybits makes the key point here — algorithmic news amplification gives a positive advantage to misinformation.
Trying to check that advantage with content moderation then becomes very clumsy.

Getting rid of the underground parkade means you can infiltrate storm water, and reduce the embodied carbon used in the construction.
