Society only exists because our ancestors formed packs to collectively care for children. It’s what allows our soft vulnerable babies to survive and why our brains are so developed

Heartland Signal @HeartlandSignal
Sen. Ron Johnson asked about reducing child care costs: "Well, people decide to have families and become parents. That's something they need to consider when they make that choice. I've never really felt it was society's responsibility to take care of other people's children." https://t.co/HyJr4iTwUG

The @DavidBeckworth NGDP gap was in slightly positive territory after Q3 of 2021 and will head further above the line once this very strong Q4 number is plugged in.
That's why I'm a Fed "hawk" now after having been a dove for the whole long 2008-2020 grind.

The policy stakes in replacing Breyer with another lib are zero & there’s an easy opportunity here for Republicans to demonstrate reasonableness by just agreeing to a confirmation they can’t halt, but you can feel they won’t be able to help themselves from throwing a racist fit.

The contrasting responses to the Sotomayor and Kagan nominations are something I’ll never forget.

Projecting this trend into the future, by January 2024 DeSantis will be +95 over Trump

Patrick Ruffini @PatrickRuffini
TRUMP v. DESANTIS two-way GOP primary:
Trump 57%
DeSantis 32%
In October, this was Trump +40. Today, it's Trump +25. https://t.co/1vYJYby3EN

This is a superb - and refreshingly sober, compared to some of the rather hysterical takes I have seen, read and heard - analysis of the state of play in American democracy in 2022 from @awprokop. Well worth reading.

American democracy is under threat. But what is that threat, exactly?

This is correct.
I first heard the up/down dichotomy in a different context where it actually made sense, as practical advice to take-slingers not a moral principle.

wrote about how adjudicating conflicts according to who's "punching up" and who's "punching down" has become increasingly muddled because almost everyone will attempt to argue in one way or another that they are the real underdog https://t.co/A0GFUIoBfN

The idea is that you should only criticize people who are more prominent than you (“punching up”) because if you successful bait them into answering (“punching down”) they are now using their larger platform to elevate your profile.

I impulsively decided to give public comment at the San Francisco Planning Commission today during their debate about implementing laws I wrote with @Scott_Wiener in 2017 and 2018.
Here's what I said:
