@joshtpm @scalzi Imagine arguing that a statute enacted in 1872 to grant amnesty to those who took up arms against the country during the Civil War actually applies prospectively, such that anyone who ever goes to war against the U.S. also can run for office later, no problem!

It costs infinity dollars per mile to build high-speed rail in the US.

... whereas the global warming petition made an argument of the form "There IS reason to believe X!"
I think scientists are more willing to mislead in the former way than the latter way
