Defenders of autocracy in China always like to claim that China is special and how unlike in Taiwan or South Korea, freedom of expression in China would lead to something horrible.

This is too simplistic. More likely Chinese leaders have a deep-rooted aversion to factionalism and fear of returning to an environment like the cultural revolution. Also, no guarantee introducing free expression leads to liberal democracy. The opposite result may be more likely https://t.co/J12vsyCH4M
