The main issue is that the profession is so underpaid that the supply of child care centers is critically low. You can subsidize care for families as Build Back Better does, or you can create public child care facilities (as we did for military families in WWII) to add supply

Until my oldest son entered pre-K last month, our monthly child care costs for two children were nearly double our mortgage https://t.co/bd7fM9ybfj

Because keeping a bunch of people as underground second-class citizens is a burden on our country, and because skilled foreign workers raise wages for native-born Americans by encouraging investment.
That's why.

How does mass amnesty for illegal aliens and uncapped foreign workers for Silicon Valley (both in the BBB reconciliation bill) qualify as “invest[ing] in our people”? https://t.co/4SdKFLTlGK

High school civics should've focused way more on City, County and State government and far less on Federal. As a byproduct, people dont care about local government, which has a far greater impact on their lives, until they become property owners.

Is this what the 70s were like?

Oculporate @AdamOculporate
@Noahpinion 70s would be golden compared to now. Single income households with as much disposable income as modern double incomers.

Let me engage in the "EU-vs-US-at-the-same-scale" comparison in a slightly different manner, hopefully more informative about the different trajectories car-dominated planning took in the postwar years
Because the problem is not only how many freeways the US built, but how 🧵

Filibuster-philes in the Democratic Party should consider that forcing the entire agenda to advance through awkward bills with many unrelated provisions essentially guarantees you’ll always have a muddled message and lots of ugly process fights.
