Afghans and Americans are perfectly within their rights to criticize US policy in afghanistan, but these European foreign policy types mad that the US “can no longer back up its commitments” or whatever…go invade and occupy afghanistan yourself if it’s such a big deal to you

The truly peculiar insanity of George W Bush’s presidency is that not only did they take this line on Afghanistan, but they also decided to sideline it in favor of Iraq.
Maximalist goals + minimalist effort is a recipe for disaster.

"Is the President concerned that the delta variant could depress box office receipts for Dune and imperil the production of a sequel?"

I think @zackbeauchamp here captures exactly why humanitarian militarism is bound to fail.

Four weeks in Real America was a reminder that in most of the country people experience a level of drunk driving risk (both as drunk drivers but also just as people on the road) that feels insane to me, whereas they think I live with a terrifying amount of murder risk.

I feel pretty confident that if you run the numbers, I am right about this and they are wrong but part of society functioning is we kind of let people disagree without turning everything into a knock-down fight.
