Whenever people are like “if you were transported back in time what would you be” I’m like obviously I would be some kind of warrior not because I’m actually strong but because I grew up on a diet high in protein and would stand a foot taller and run faster than anyone alive.

I think @zackbeauchamp here captures exactly why humanitarian militarism is bound to fail.
Democratic states that can't be bothered to know or care anything about events abroad also cannot effectively use military force to benefit the residents of those countries.

Four weeks in Real America was a reminder that in most of the country people experience a level of drunk driving risk (both as drunk drivers but also just as people on the road) that feels insane to me, whereas they think I live with a terrifying amount of murder risk.
